With Original Medicare, the government pays directly for the health care you receive.

Medicare pays a fixed amount for your care every month to private companies. The Medicare Advantage Plan is then responsible for coordinating and paying for your health care.

You can generally join a Medicare Advantage Plan if you:
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is October 15 – December 7. It is a time when eligible Medicare Beneficiaries can join a Medicare Advantage Plan. Coverage from the plan you join will begin on January 1.
Other times that you might be able to join a Medicare Advantage Plan are referred to as Special Enrollment Period (SEPs).

You do not automatically get this coverage when you become eligible for Medicare. To receive drug coverage, you can do one of the following: Add a prescription drug plan to your existing Medicare coverage or Join a Medicare Advantage (part C) that includes prescription drug coverage.
